The Mark I is the variation of the 1903 that is meant to accomidate the semi-automatic conversion called the Peterson Device. This insert enabled a small size .30cal cartridge to be fired from a slightly modified 1903. This modification consisted of a cut out in the left side of the reciver to serve as an ejection port. About 102,000 of these rifles were made with this modification. After the Device was scrapped, most of the rifles were retained, and issued as regular guns. Many, like this one were reworked just before WW2.
